Government plans
threatens the future
of Burpham

Proposed government plans will cause a massive increase in housing in and around Burpham. The village will be lost in a Guildford/Woking sprawl, the Green belt around us will disappear and this development can take place without any supporting infrastructure. In spite of Aldi's assurances that they would advise us of any planned activities, this obviously wasn't happening when we discovered the roof was being removed on 5th April. We discovered at the end of May 2008 that Aldi have anticipated demolishing the Green Man in July. If this is what they do indeed plan on doing, this gives us very little time to take action.

The site needs to be kept as a pub and restaurant as the community of 4,000 has nowhere to go. The other pub 800 metres from the park changing rooms is too small so cannot cope with cricket and football teams and is too far for young families to walk to from the park. This site has been a pub since 1593 and must stay this way.

Burpham (pronounced Ber-fam) is a leafy village of around 2000 homes on the north-eastern edge of Guildford, Surrey. We have close links with Merrow village to one side and Jacobswell village on another. We see Burpham as a perfect place to live, combining virtually everything you would expect to find in a modern community with the traditional aspects you would also hope to find in an old English village.

This is primarily the website of the Burpham Community Association (BCA). The BCA was formed in 1973 as a result of a group of residents wanting to unite and to act for the community in local affairs. In the beginning, families chose to join the association and paid 10p per person to join. An inaugural meeting was held, a committee formed and a constitution framed. 500 households joined initially. For over 30 years now, the BCA has been working for the community. Local residents have given their time and energy free of charge as they believe in Burpham as a great place to live.

Some of the initial problems facing the BCA at its start were a public enquiry into the new site for the A3 and the proposal to build another estate on Weylea Farm. The first newsletter published by the BCA was dated November 1973, and these have been published on a fairly regular basis ever since. In the last twelve months there has been a new publication called Burpham Pages which is delivered to over 2,000 homes in Burpham every two months
