You will be aware of the fact that the Green Man Harvester pub and restaurant closed for business in the summer last year and is now boarded up. We have a campaign going which has a lot of local support to stop the demolition of this wonderful building. We need your help and support with letters to Guildford Borough Council to help stop this building being demolished. We have two means of objection and would be grateful if you could help with both. Here are links to an objection letter and a petition form. The letter should be sent via Alan Finnis who is acting on our behalf with a copy going to Guildford Borough Council. If you are able to get a few signatures and send it off to the Council, that would also be of great help. Many thanks. For addresses, see below.

We are pleased to inform everyone that GBC have received 1,742 letters of objection (before 1st January) to the demolition of our Green Man Pub. Most of these letters came from our stalls outside Sainsbury’s and at the Sutherland Memorial Park Firework display. We would like to thank everyone who made this possible. There are also a large number of letters sent in as a result of our mail-outs plus some all-important individual letters of objection.

GBC are now assessing what to do with this large volume of correspondence.

The surge of objection was prompted by the public declaration of intention made by ALDI at our public meeting on 18th September 2006 when they showed us their plans for their discount store and later the provocative posting of a notice on the Green Man, advising start of demolition on 2nd October 2006. After discussion with GBC, ALDI withdrew this request for demolition and we now await developments.

Details and statistics of existing retail in the area and projected traffic problems are being assembled. Also underway is a review of the disposition and availability of the ‘places for social activity’ in the locality.

So a massive thank you to all of you that have written in and helped spread the word.

We will keep you all informed of developments as they come to notice and we need to hear from you too. Please register your email address with us via burphamsurrey@yahoo.co.uk

Another problem arising from this matter is our right of way being blocked across the car park area. This is due to the boards being erected around the property boundaries. Residents and users of this public right of way need to object and are invited to send letters regarding this via Alan Finnis who is acting on our behalf with copies of any letters going to Guildford Borough Council.
