It's very sad for us to report that The Green Man was demolished over the few days starting from Saturday 13th December 2008 by workmen employed by Aldi. They entered the site with a police escort. We support the popular public view that the site needs to be kept as a pub and restaurant as the community of 4,000 has nowhere to go. The other pub 800 metres from the park is too small so cannot cope with cricket and football teams and is too far for young families to walk to from the park. This site has been a pub since 1593 and must stay this way.

By January 2007, Guildford Borough Council had received 1,742 letters of objection. The surge of objection was prompted by the public declaration of intention made by ALDI at our public meeting on 18th September 2006 when they showed us their plans for their discount store and later the provocative posting of a notice on the Green Man, advising start of demolition on 2nd October 2006. At a later date workmen entered the site to remove roof tiles, then last December the building was demolished aparently on Health & Safety grounds.
