Burpham Bowling Club was founded in 1990 soon after Sutherland Memorial Park was formed. The club badge design was based on the armorial bearings of the Duke of Sutherland who donated the tract of land comprising most of the park. The land is owned by Guildford Borough Council who undertake the maintenance of the ground and lease it to the club. Over the years the club has expanded its clubroom to give increased facilities for members including disabled members and visitors.
Bowling started on the green in 1991, on a limited basis, as the grass was still establishing itself: the full green was available in 1992. The club formed as a mixed club and affiliated itself to the English Bowling Association and other relevant governing bodies. Since that time the club has become a club of note having friendly and league matches with local clubs and with members taking part in a wide range of competitions and with some successes.
The club has bowling on most days during the summer season and accommodates members of all skill levels. Beginners can have tuition with club instructors and we have occasions for potential members to give it a try! Saturdays and Sundays are normally friendly mixed matches, Thursday evenings and Friday afternoons are for all members to join with friendly bowling. Other days are for league and competition games, ladies' or men's matches, or for casual roll ups by members. Thursday evenings throughout the year are social club evenings. There are also many other social functions for members. Many of our members also bowl indoors at Wey Valley Bowling Club during the winter or at one of the local Short Mat Bowls Clubs.
If you are interested in bowling either as an absolute beginner, or a player, come to the club any Thursday evening or Friday afternoon in the summer. For more information or to join the club, contact the Secretary Keith Sutton on 578015 or Club Captain Keith Crossman on 825312.
