We are pleased to inform everyone that GBC have now received 1,742 letters of objection to the demolition of our Green Man Pub. Most of these letters came from our stalls outside Sainsbury’s and at the Sutherland Memorial Park Firework display. We would like to thank everyone who made this possible. There are also a large number of letters sent in as a result of our mail-outs plus some all-important individual letters of objection. GBC are now assessing what to do with this large volume of correspondence. The surge of objection was prompted by the public declaration of intention made by ALDI at our public meeting on the 18th Sept when they showed us their plans for their discount store and later the provocative posting of a notice on the Green Man, advising start of demolition on the 2nd Oct. After discussion with GBC, ALDI withdrew this request for demolition and we now await developments. Details and statistics of existing retail in the area and projected traffic problems are being assembled. Also underway is a review of the disposition and availability of the ‘places for social activity’ in the locality. So a massive thank you to all of you that have written in and helped spread the word. We will keep you all informed of developments as they come to notice in 2008 and we need to hear from you too. Please register your email address with us via burphamsurrey@yahoo.co.uk Burpham Community Association (BCA) committee meetings happen once a month with a break in August and December (i.e. no August or December meetings). At these meetings, we discuss serious local issues and plan any necessary action. Of course it's extremely important for us to communicate and work with various community groups and we normally have members attending our meetings including the police, local borough and county councillors, school representatives and our local vicar, many of whom are long standing members of the BCA committee. We will often invite a particular guest or guests to a meeting to discuss a specific subject, like heads of local schools or someone from the Council Parks department. These meetings are open to residents of Burpham. You do not need to have a particular concern to attend a meeting. Maybe you would just like to find out how your community association operates. Maybe you would like to give a little time to help with something?
